Rydal Penrhos Blitz Chess Championships 2012
Rydal Penrhos Prep School launched the very first Rydal Penrhos Primary Schools Blitz Chess Championships on Friday (3 February 2012)
Ten chess-lovers and their families were treated to half an hour of chess coaching where they learned some basic check-mating tactics that they would apply to their own games. The players took part with gusto and enthusiasm and displayed some good knowledge of the game.
The coaching was followed up by a fast and furious Blitz competition in the school library where each player had five ten-minute games. Competition was fierce and the overall result was not known until the final game was over. In the end, the top three were:
1st: Jacob Cannon from Ysgol Llanddulas
2nd: Jamie Cummins from Ysgol Bodfari
3rd: Sam Vaughan Jones from Ysgol Glan Conwy
Each of these winners received a trophy and a medal while all players received a medal and a ‘goodie bag’ containing among other things, a chess puzzle booklet to keep them going until their next games.
The visiting children were a credit to themselves, their families and their schools as they showed great enthusiasm and terrific skills. They were a delight to welcome to Rydal Penrhos.
Rydal Penrhos pupils, Robert Warrington, Ho-Wing Ma, Imogen Camp, Nicholas Fiorita and Arjan Bolina also shone whilst working as helpers, tour-guides and board stewards.
This was a great event and we intend to hold many more in the future.
Mr Camp
