Two new players take centre stage at Chess Club

Two of the youngest chess players at Rydal Penrhos Prep School gave outstanding performances at the recent National Primary Schools’ Rapidplay Championships held in Liverpool. James Smith and Ali Al Rawi both age 8, fought their way to equal fifth place out of over fifty entrants in the under eight competition.

James and Ali only started learning how to play chess a year ago and their remarkable progress was rewarded with this excellent showing in Liverpool. Their coach, Andrew Camp, who is also a teacher at Rydal Penrhos Prep School said, “We are used to getting success with our older players so it was wonderful to see such excellent results from our youngest this time. We start coaching our children from the age of six so our conveyor belt of talent is clearly working well.’

James and Ali are now both looking forward to joining the rest of the school’s players in the UK Chess Challenge, which begins in March.

Chess is hugely popular with the pupils at Rydal Penrhos Prep School, with Chess Club meeting regularly during lunchtime break. Recent successes include two members, Imogen Camp and Arjan Bolina being chosen to represent Wales in the Junior Quadrangle Team Tournament.

Rydal Penrhos Prep School is holding a free Blitz Chess Championship on Friday 3 February 2012 open to any child who loves playing chess. The tournament will include a prize giving ceremony for successful players. Players should arrive from 3.30pm in time for a brief coaching session at 4pm before the tournament itself begins at 4.30pm.
