Year 6 premiere ‘Chair Music’ with Ensemble Cymru
The final lunchtime concert of the year with Ensemble Cymru featured a world exclusive performance by pupils in Year 6!
While learning about ‘ostinato’ – repeated patterns – in their music class, the pupils created their own repeated patterns using their chairs as instruments and created a piece of music called ‘Chair Music’.
Surrounding the audience with their chairs, the pupils, Mr Williams and Sioned and Mike from Ensemble Cymru were led by conductor Daisy Lee-Browne, who began the rhythm by tapping together two drumsticks. Daisy counted in each player who played a rhythm on their chair using their hands, and before we knew it the unique piece of music had built to a fantastic crescendo. To complete the piece, Daisy stopped each of the players one by one and the music softened ending with the soft tapping of the drumsticks.
Individual performances followed, with a number of pupils from Year 6 showcasing their various talents, from singing and dancing to playing the piano and the saxophone.

Kazima Abbas who sang ‘Warwick Avenue’ by Duffy
Ewan Luke who played 2 pieces on the saxophone
Gowri Pradeep who played the piano
Bernardas Subkovas who played the piano
Imogen Camp who played the piano
The final performance was a dance routine by Ruby James, Alexis Katsouris, Hannah Bloodworth and Emily Brown.
The concert also featured Sioned and Mike from Ensemble Cymru who played pieces of music which demonstrated repeated patterns.
During ‘Carnival of the Animals’, Mike asked the audience to put their hands up when they heard the same repeated patterns as he played the part of the elephant on the double bass. Meanwhile Sioned asked the audience how long they could hold their breath for, before demonstrating how circular breathing can help her to hold on to long notes when playing the clarinet.
