Year 2 learn about electricity during trip to Electric Mountain

As part of their science studies, pupils in Year 2 visited Dinorwic Power Station, also known as Electric Mountain, in Llanberis to learn more about electricity.

After arriving at the Power Station, everyone watched a video about why the power station is so amazing, before getting on a bus and travelling deep inside the mountain.

The bus gradually dropped 60m below the level of Llyn Peris as it travelled into the mountain and helmets were put on as the bus stopped and pupils could look at the massive taps which control the flow of water. The path of the water was followed, by climbing some steps to the turbine hall. The children discovered that water passing through the valves spins the turbine which in turn spins the shaft which is connected to the generator, which then makes electricity.

Everyone then got back on to the bus to travel to the 9th floor where pupils were able to look down at the massive machine hall and see the generators. After watching a second video, this time about life in the Dinorwig Slate Quarry before it closed, the children were told to look out for the Lady of Snowdon on the way back to the surface – which turned out to be a boat!

The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip, with Katie Pritchard Jonas describing it as “brilliant” and Freddie Spillane saying “it was brilliant because of the noise!”
