No umbrellas needed at Forest School opening

The rain stayed away long enough for Rydal Penrhos Prep School to officially launch its Forest School project on Friday 4 November with pupils, parents, teachers and VIP guests gathering for the grand opening.

The launch began with a school assembly, where pupils aged 5 and 6 impressively explained to the assembled audience what Forest School is and what they’ve been doing in the Forest during their lessons.

Moving to the entrance of the Forest School – based in the extensive grounds of the Prep School – for the grand opening, former Governor of the School Pat Jones was given the honour of cutting the ribbon. The sound of deafening cheers and claps echoed as Mrs Jones pronounced the Forest School open! Once in the Forest, guests then witnessed Mrs Jones planting a tree to commemorate the opening.

Various activities continued throughout the morning with younger children spending time learning about Goldilocks and the Three Bears before enjoying some porridge, while older children learned how to identify the Holly tree and counted how many they could find.

The aim of the Forest School is to enhance the school experience, allowing children to explore the forest while also learning about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly how to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others.

The Forest School is one of the many reasons Rydal Penrhos Prep School is popular with parents and pupils. The School has a real sense of community which is strongly supported by a contemporary curriculum, technological resources and specialist teachers.

Headmaster Roger McDuff, who has now been in the school for a year and who initiated the opening of Forest School goes on to say: “New doors are being opened all of the time to ensure that children find their niche, grow in self-confidence and develop into well-rounded, hard working and successful individuals, Forest School is just one of these new doors.”
