Imogen selected for Welsh chess team

A pupil at Rydal Penrhos Prep School is celebrating after being selected to play chess at National level.

Imogen Camp, age 10 from Colwyn Bay, has been selected to join the Welsh National Junior Squad and will be making her first appearance at the Junior Quadrangle Team Tournament held in Liverpool in December.

Joining the Welsh squad is the latest in Imogen’s long list of achievements in the world of chess. Having started playing at the age of 4, Imogen has been named County Chess Champion four years in a row and finished in 28th place when competing against 68,000 other players in the UK Chess Challenge in 2010, as well as being named British Chess Champion in her age group on two occasions.

Imogen receives online coaching every week from one of the UK’s top female chess players, Sabrina Chevannes and was named the School’s Chess Captain at the beginning of the school year. As part of her role as Chess Captain, Imogen helps to coach the younger players in the School twice a week.

Chess has always been a popular activity at Rydal Penrhos Prep School with pupils practicing during their lunch breaks. Chess offers many benefits to the pupils, and has even helped their academic studies, with some parents noting a marked improvement in their children’s concentration and in their work.
