Rydal Penrhos Pupils Continue to Lead the way in Chess

The Cheshire and North Wales County Chess Championships has been a happy hunting ground for our chess-playing pupils in recent years and this year’s event on Saturday, 8th October proved to be no exception.

Eighteen pupils from the Prep School and one from the Senior School converged in Chester all eager to put new skills to the test and to swallow up as many medals and trophies as possible.

The tournament is run on several levels. The players compete within age groups and prizes are awarded for the overall winner, the best County player (those who have competed for their County team) and the best school player (those who have not yet played for their County. Each player plays six games throughout the day and their points are added to an overall school total to find the best school of the day.

Rydal Penrhos made its usual blistering start with several successes coming in from Round One onwards. At the end of the day, the school was crowned the ‘Best Primary School in the County’– an accolade we have now achieved for three years running. We also are proud of the following individual successes:

Arjan Bolina: Overall Under 9 Champion with 5.5 points out of 6. Arjan had to overcome another player in a fiercely fought play-off at the end of the day to grab the title.

Imogen Camp: County Under 11 Champion with 5 points out of 6. Imogen went through the tournament unbeaten with 4 wins and 2 draws.

Rafeez Mortuza: School Under 11 Champion with 4.5 points out of 6. An excellent performance which gives Rafeez his 3rd tournament win of 2011.

Robert Warrington: 2nd place in the Under 15 County tournament, a superb result given many of his games were against older players.

Ziraili Ulfin: 2nd place in the Under 9 County tournament and the highest placed female.

Ali al-Rawi: 2nd place in the Under 8 School tournament beating every player he met from a different school.

The children were a credit to the entire school with their standard of play, dedication to bring in points for the school and their behaviour. They worked hard, partook in training between rounds and were great company throughout.

Rydal Penrhos continues to lead the way in Junior Chess in the North of Wales and the United Kingdom and we look forward to further successes throughout the year as well as some big plans to be announced soon.
