Year 2 become trainee Celts
Pupils in Year 2 were transformed into Celts during a recent class trip to Plas Power Environmental Education Centre in Wrexham.
Year 2 have been studying Celts since the start of the autumn term, exploring their culture and heritage both in the classroom and in the new Forest School.
The action packed day at Plas Power began with the children being told the story of a Celtic warrior who had been sent on a quest to slay a giant and a wild boar, but had not returned. The children were asked to keep their eyes peeled for him during the day.
Before helping out a Celt with his daily tasks which included wattling and daub, spinning yarn and weaving, the children became Celts themselves. Dressed up in tunics and shawls with their faces painted with blue swirls to frighten enemies and hair spiked up to make it look wild, the children (and teachers!) were magically transformed into trainee Celts.
After a fun morning outside the children began the afternoon designing their own shields, choosing their own pattern and colours to help them scare off any passing giants.
Then it was time to get messy learning how to make thumb pots before returning outside to daub the wattle with mud.
The day ended with some warrior training with each child having a go at throwing a spear (not a real one of course!) and screaming very loudly to scare off any enemies.
