Year 1 enjoy creating self portraits

Pupils in Year One enjoyed a trip to Oriel Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno last week where they took part in a portrait workshop.

The day began with the pupils creating 2D self portraits using pencils or oil pastels, helped along by Bernie who ran the course. Bernie showed pupils how to draw a self portrait and importantly, how to make sure they had their features in the right places!

Next the pupils created 3D images of their self portraits which they began building with newspaper and tape. When it came to colouring in the portraits the girls opted for very realistic skin colours while the boys preferred something a little more abstract and opted for multi-coloured styles including green and blue with purple hair!

Here’s a few of the finished pieces:

The purpose of the trip was to allow pupils to explore and experiment with a variety of techniques and choose their own materials when creating their portraits. They were given the opportunity to mix, shape, arrange and combine materials to create their own portraits and when everyone had finished, each class member was able to reflect on their own and each others’ work.
