UK Chess Challenge
This is a national competition which takes place over four stages. Stage 1 is in school. The successful candidates then go through to a county stage. Those that do well there go through to a regional (nort/south) stage and those that succeed in that go on to the National Finals. Over 68,000 children entered this competition and these were whittled down to just 250 for the national finals in Warwick. Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School provided THREE pupils to these finals. This is a stunning achievement and no other school or group sent as many. Our stars are Imogen Turvey-Cross, Hannah Mew McAdam and Savanna Dickens.
British Chess Championship (Canterbury, July/August 2010)
Imogen Turvey-Cross from Year 5 in the Prep School has just become the British Champion of Chess at Under 10 level. This is despite her actually being an under 9. She had to play seven games over 5 days against the best under 10s in the country – each game lasting a maximum of four hours.
With two games to go, Imogen was looking like she might fall short but she pulled out 2 more fantastic wins to grab the trophy. This is Imogen’s second successive British Title having won the under 8 Championship in 2009.
