Charity work

Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School has a strong reputation for its efforts to raise funds for charity. Throughout the year, a number of activities are organised to support this. Children and parents are kept up-to-date through letters and flyers. We thank you all for your support on these occasions.

Eco Committee

Group activities for the Eco Club began almost three years ago and include:

  • Establishing an Eco Committee
  • Managing waste paper in the Prep School
  • Monitoring use of lights, water and computers
  • Establishing school garden and composting
  • Tree planting
  • Supporting annual ‘Walk to School’ Week
  • Participating in ‘Grow your own’ and ‘Let’s Grow’ competitions
  • Operating a beach clean-up at Colwyn Bay
  • Fund raising to support the school garden project
  • Focused School Assemblies

The group comprises children from each year, staff representatives, parents and governors. Appointed committee posts are held by children who are elected by their peers within the group. Elections are held every twelve months at the start of the new school year. Regular meetings are held at the school where plans are made by the children for forthcoming projects and activities.

ICT

The computer club is held on a Monday night for children from Reception and Year 1. The club runs from 3.45pm – 4.30pm. It is based in the library where we have 13 computers and the children mainly play on sites like CBeebies, Playhouse Disney, Tizzy’s First Tools. This helps them to gain further computer skills and hand-eye coordination.

Public speaking

This year’s Head Boy and Head Girl delivered the following speeches during the May 2011 Speech Day.

Head Boy, Morgan Roberts

Good afternoon. Firstly I would like to start off by saying thank you to all the prefects for their help around the school and the teachers and Mr McDuff for all their efforts. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my mum and dad for being so supportive.

I started at Rydal Penrhos in the Early Years department, and then I went to a different school for 5 years, but last year in year 5 I came back. It was the best thing my mum and dad did for me. I have been back at Rydal Penrhos for 2 years now and it has been so much fun. I am also really glad that I have made so many good friends.

Something I remember about becoming Head Boy is that when Mrs Hind called my name out I went on the stage and I looked and I saw my dad crying. I didn’t know whether he was crying because he was happy for me or because he had to buy me a new laptop.

The thing I have enjoyed most about being in Year 6 is being Head Boy. I have enjoyed all the responsibility, helping people, showing visitors around the school and, of course, making speeches! I have learnt a lot in year 6 and I’ve particularly enjoyed Art, DT, Games/PE and Maths.

I think that, most of Year 6 would agree, walking up Snowdon was one of the best things we have done. I have also loved skiing and being in the Rydal Penrhos Ski Team. Going to Llangrannog for the Welsh School Ski Championships was amazing.

I would like to wish all the upcoming Year 6’s best of luck to. I am looking forward to joining the Senior School in September.

Thank you.

Head Girl, Anna Richardson

Good afternoon, Mayor and Mayoress, Honoured Guests, Ladies, Gentlemen and children.

Thank you for coming to join us at our Speech Day. I can’t believe how quickly this day has come around. I can still remember the first day I arrived at this school six long years ago. On arrival, I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect, but I needn’t have worried because thanks to Mrs. Chamberlain’s kindness and care, I settled in very quickly and soon felt as though I had been here forever.

Over the years, I have enjoyed many aspects of school life such as sports, drama, after school clubs, schools trips… oh and of course lessons! One of the best parts has been sharing all of this with the great people in my Year. I will always remember the times we enjoyed together, the fun we had and the lessons we learned. Many of the teachers may not want to remember some of the moments with our class in the past … but maybe the less said the better!

There were some sad times too and I would really like to mention Adam here. We didn’t know him for very long but we were all impressed by his incredible bravery and his strength. His passing away was difficult for many of us to understand but I would like to thank Mr Roebuck for keeping us informed about Adam while he was ill and helping us to cope with his death.

None of us would be here today without the help and support of our parents and teachers. I would like to thank Mr McDuff and Mrs Hind for their hard work this year. I would also like to thank Mr McLeod and Mrs Pyves for their endless hours you have both put into sporting events and matches. How your hearing has survived the many bus trips filled with loud and tuneless singing, I will never know!

By the way Mr Williams that is nothing to do with your excellent teaching! Speaking of which, our many thanks go to you for your dedication and enthusiasm over the years in filling us with appreciation for music. Taking part in school productions over the years has also been a wonderful experience and I would like to thank Mr Camp, Mr Bendall and the many other staff involved for giving us the opportunity to take part. It’s interesting that over the years my sister and I seem to have cornered the market for playing the roles of baddies!

There are so many staff that I want to thank individually but we would be here for quite a long time. So a big thank you to all of your! We really appreciate all the encouragement, hard work and effort you have all put in to help us be who we are today. We have grown into confident, independent and responsible people and much of this is a result of being part of this happy school community.

I would like to offer my thanks for being chosen as Head Girl this year. I have really enjoyed every moment of it, well apart from the nervousness of giving this speech, as it has given me many opportunities to take responsibility and help the school in many different ways.

All of us will be going to Secondary school in September and now we need to look towards the future and step out in confidence, but there is one thing that we will always keep in our hearts and that is the special memories we have of Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School.

Thank you.
